Chipotle's Mexico Entry Begins in Monterrey Chipotle Mexican Grill opened its first restaurant in Mexico on Thursday, July 16, in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, marking a significant step in the chain's international growth strategy. The opening came through a partnership with Alsea, a major restaurant operator across Latin America and Europe. The new location serves Chipotle's signature menu of burritos, bowls, salads, tacos, and quesadillas made fresh throughout the day with ingredients sourced from regional suppliers. The restaurant operates under Chipotle's standard sourcing commitments: no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. "We are entering Mexico with deep respect for the country's culinary heritage and a commitment to delivering the Chipotle experience with excellence," said Scott Boatwright, CEO of Chipotle. "Our research has reinforced our belief that there is strong interest in high-quality, freshly prepared food served with the customization and convenience that Chipotle offers."

Expansion Plan Takes Shape Chipotle and Alsea first announced their development agreement in April 2025.

The partners plan to open additional restaurants in Nuevo León later this year, with expansion into Mexico City scheduled for 2027. Monterrey's selection reflects its strong economy, growing population, and status as a business and innovation hub. "We've spent years evaluating opportunities to bring Chipotle to Mexico, and this week's opening reinforces our confidence in the market," said Nate Lawton, Chief Business Development Officer of Chipotle. "Our initial focus is on opening one great restaurant and learning alongside our guests and our partners at Alsea. This first location will serve as an important proof-of-concept, giving us the opportunity to better understand local consumer preferences as we thoughtfully grow in Mexico." Christian Gurría, CEO of Alsea, called the opening "an important step in our growth and portfolio diversification strategy." Alsea operates more than 4,800 restaurants across 12 countries, including brands such as Domino's Pizza, Starbucks, Burger King, and Chili's.

Building Global Presence The Mexico opening expands Chipotle's international footprint beyond its existing presence.

The chain currently operates more than 80 locations in Canada, 20 in the U.K., six in France, and two in Germany. Earlier international moves include an agreement with Alshaya Group to operate 15 restaurants across the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar, and a joint venture with South Korea's SPC Group to open locations in South Korea and Singapore. Chipotle operates over 4,100 restaurants worldwide and expects to open between 350 and 370 new restaurants in 2026 as part of its "Recipe for Growth" strategy, which includes a target of 7,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Why It Matters

For operators and investors tracking QSR expansion, Mexico represents both opportunity and operational complexity—labor markets, supply chains, and consumer preferences differ materially from North America. Chipotle's partnership with Alsea, which has deep regional expertise, positions the chain to learn those dynamics through a single proof-of-concept location before scaling.
