Holland America Line has debuted a fully redesigned Ocean Bar aboard the Oosterdam, introducing a dedicated performance stage, a repositioned bar and Art Deco-accented interiors as part of the cruise line's sweeping Holland America Evolution program — the largest fleet update in its 153-year history.

The Venue Transformation

The redesigned space pivots the Ocean Bar from a traditional cocktail lounge into an entertainment-forward venue. A new stage expands the programming slate to include Vivace Strings ensembles, regional soloists, pianists and late-night cabaret. The bar itself has been physically relocated within the room to tighten sightlines between guests and performers — a layout decision that reflects a broader hospitality industry shift toward experiential food-and-beverage spaces where atmosphere and live programming drive dwell time and spend.

Michael Stendebach, senior vice president of food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line, credited the line's maritime heritage as the creative anchor. "Inspired by our maritime heritage, including design details drawn from Rotterdam V, this reimagined venue creates a setting where guests can gather for a cocktail, enjoy live music and immerse themselves in the refined elegance that has always been part of the Holland America experience," he said.

Design and Sustainability

Custom furnishings developed exclusively for the venue draw on vintage travel trunk and luggage motifs, with leather accents evoking the romance of classic ocean voyages. Art Deco detailing runs throughout, pairing warm aesthetics with subtle nautical references. Critically for operators watching sustainability metrics, existing lounge furniture with usable life remaining will be reupholstered in fabrics manufactured with recycled content rather than replaced outright — a circularity approach gaining traction across upscale hospitality beverage and lounge design.

Scale of the Evolution Program

The Ocean Bar reveal is the opening chapter of a much larger capital commitment. Holland America's Evolution program will revitalize all six Vista Class and Signature Class ships, beginning with Oosterdam and Zuiderdam. The company has committed more than $500 million across the six vessels, funding enhancements to public areas, onboard amenities, and additional staterooms and suites. The overhaul is explicitly guided by guest feedback and designed to bring features from Holland America's premium Pinnacle Class ships to a wider portion of the fleet.

For foodservice and beverage professionals working in cruise, hotel, or resort environments, the Ocean Bar redesign illustrates how operators are integrating live entertainment infrastructure directly into bar and lounge buildouts — blurring the line between F&B venue and performance space to lengthen the guest occasion and justify premium cocktail pricing. The trend mirrors moves seen across land-based restaurant and bar entertainment concepts where dedicated stages and curated programming have become central to revenue strategy rather than an afterthought.

Bookings for Oosterdam and Zuiderdam sailings following their respective refurbishments are currently open. Full details on the Evolution program are available at hollandamerica.com/evolution.
