Fourth-Generation Grocer Honored for Business and Community Leadership Telemachus "T.A." Demoulas, a fourth-generation member of the Demoulas family that built Market Basket into one of New England's largest grocery chains, will receive the Alpha Omega Council's 2026 Emerging Leader Award at its Annual Honors Gala on October 2 at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston. The award recognizes Demoulas for his leadership at Market Basket and his commitment to community engagement and Hellenic values. Since joining the company full-time in 2014, he has held key roles in the grocery and real estate departments, most recently leading the grocery buying team. "T.A. Demoulas represents the very best of the next generation of Greek-American leadership," said Costa Speliakos, President-Elect of the Alpha Omega Council. "His commitment to family, business excellence, philanthropy and community reflects the values upon which the Alpha Omega Council was founded. We are honored to recognize his accomplishments and look forward to celebrating his continued impact for years to come."

Market Basket's Multi-Generation Legacy Market Basket was founded in 1917 by T.A.'s great-grandparents, Athanasios and Efrosini Demoulas, who emigrated from Kalambaka, Greece. The company has grown from a single store selling lamb and vegetables into one of the largest grocery chains in New England, operating under the stewardship of T.A.'s grandfather, Telemachus Demoulas, and his father, Arthur T. Demoulas. "It is a privilege to serve my family business and to help to uphold the culture of excellent customer service and great value established by my great-grandfather and grandfather," Demoulas said. "I'm proud of the contributions my family has made over many generations, and I look forward to continuing that legacy." The gala is part of the Alpha Omega Council's 50th Anniversary Weekend, which runs October 2–4 and includes a concert by Greek superstar Konstantinos Argiros on October 3 and a Leadership Luncheon honoring past council presidents on October 4.

Why It Matters

The award underscores the visibility of family-operated supermarket chains in regional markets.

As Market Basket continues to navigate competitive pressures from national retailers, leadership transitions and the involvement of younger generations in strategic roles—from buying to real estate—remain central to operator interest in the Northeast grocery landscape.
