P.F. Chang's is rolling out its first annual cause-marketing platform tied to the Chinese zodiac calendar, aiming to raise $500,000 for Starlight Children's Foundation during a September campaign that leans on a limited-edition plush toy, a children's book, and layered in-restaurant giving mechanics.
The inaugural effort, branded Year of the Fire Horse: Spirit of Strength, runs September 2 through September 30 at participating full-service P.F. Chang's locations. Guests can purchase Bao — a $10 horse plushie inspired by the Fire Horse's themes of strength and resilience — during dine-in visits. For every Bao sold, the chain donates an identical plushie to Starlight for distribution through its pediatric hospital network, capped at 20,000 donated plushies. Guests who buy Bao or make a direct in-restaurant donation of $10 or more receive a complimentary appetizer offer redeemable with an entrée purchase on a return dine-in visit, valid through October 31, 2026.
The Giving Mechanics
The campaign layers multiple revenue-to-charity pathways — a deliberate structure for operators watching how cause-marketing programs perform. Beyond the plushie purchase, guests can round up their checks or contribute a direct cash donation at the point of sale, with 100 percent of round-up funds going to Starlight. The tiered approach gives guests flexible giving options at different price points without requiring a minimum transaction, a model that has proven effective at driving broader participation in restaurant charitable fundraising.
"At P.F. Chang's, we believe in business with a purpose and creating meaningful moments that extend beyond the restaurant," said Jim Mazany, Chief Executive Officer of P.F. Chang's. "Spirit of the Zodiac gives us a new way to bring that commitment to life each year."
The program is designed to recur annually, with each year's campaign themed around the corresponding Chinese zodiac sign — giving operators a repeatable cultural marketing hook tied to the lunar calendar. The children's book component, written by Jenny Liao and illustrated by Adriane Tsai, extends brand exposure into a digital storytelling format expected to publish later in September, keeping the campaign visible beyond the four walls of the restaurant.
Beyond the Campaign Month
The partnership with Starlight extends past September. P.F. Chang's and Starlight plan joint in-hospital catering events and plushie deliveries in early October, bringing brand teams directly into pediatric facilities — a visibility play with goodwill implications that goes well beyond a standard check-writing partnership. Starlight currently serves more than 800 children's hospitals nationwide through programs that include toy deliveries, hospital gowns, and gaming stations.
"For kids facing serious illness, something as simple as a plush toy can provide a positive distraction, ease stress and anxiety and bring a sense of comfort to an unfamiliar experience," said Adam Garone, CEO of Starlight Children's Foundation.
For full-service casual dining operators tracking engagement strategies, cause-marketing programs with recurring annual themes and collectible merchandise are gaining traction as a way to drive repeat visits and deepen brand affinity — particularly when paired with return-visit incentives like the complimentary appetizer offer built into this campaign. Our hospitality and community engagement coverage tracks how similar programs are shaping guest loyalty across the segment. The campaign is not available through third-party delivery platforms, airport locations, or international units, keeping the traffic-driving benefit squarely within domestic dine-in channels.
